This fall, Shevlin Crossing will host a rotating series of art exhibitions, featuring local artists and their work. Though many of our team members are art lovers, we aren’t exactly art experts, so we turned to local artist Mark Jamnik to curate the exhibit for us.
We asked Mark about the art curation process, and how he will select artists and develop the exhibitions at Shevlin Crossing.
Mark told us that for him, art is about community and connection. Shevlin Crossing will serve as the perfect blank canvas for bringing these concepts to life through rotating art exhibits. Mark’s own art–abstract paintings–will comprise the first exhibit, to take place this fall. We’ll announce dates and artists as they become available.
In selecting subsequent art for the series at Shevlin Crossing, Mark said he will focus on three main things: aesthetic alignment with the building and space, size and scale, and with an eye on local Bend artists.
He is likely to select those artists who have a body of work that is made up of larger works, due to the size and scale of the walls, windows, and light spaces in the building. He stated that larger pieces will draw the viewer in and welcome them as they enter the building. And he’d really like to showcase local artists to give them a platform for connecting with building tenants and the local community.
Exhibits are likely to include paintings, but may also include textile arts, metal art, and sculptures. He said he will see what emerges as options and opportunities.
Each exhibit will be launched with an opening reception, where artists, tenants, and neighbors will be encouraged to invite their friends, family, clientele, and colleagues. Pieces exhibited will be for sale, and exhibits will remain for three to six months before the next exhibit is presented.
Mark said he’s excited for the interactions between tenants, the community, and local artists. He said having art close by in this kind of work setting is a great opportunity for people to engage more intimately with the pieces in a setting other than museums and galleries.
Mark is hoping these exhibits inspire us all to take a look inside and tap into the artist within each of us.

About Mark Jamnik
Mark has been passionate about art, starting at a very young age, and has painted so many abstract paintings in the last decade in line with a style her refers to as “subliminal story art.” These paintings begin with a story that Mark writes on the canvas, which inform the piece. At the start, Mark has no idea what each work will turn into, but it each has a deeper meaning hidden in the paintings, He also conducts community events where he invites participants to write a word or phrase on a canvas, embedding each meaning, and Mark later paints over these messages, which imbue each work with significance. Mark loves aesthetics and travel and finds himself inspired by the countries he has visited. These destinations include ancient Rome, modern Tokyo, the Ecuadorian rainforest, and more. Mark says he is inspired by simplicity–from the modern building structure and angles that depict modern man’s version of perfection, to the way nature effortlessly blends the true definition: imperfection. These are the aspects from which he draws inspiration to create his subliminal at, he says, “With deep meaning, similar to the beauty and depth that lies deep underneath each of our lives.”
